Hyderabad: Payal Shankar is presently serving as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Adilabad. He entered the Telangana Legislative Assembly in December 2023 after defeating former minister Jogu Ramanna of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) by 6,692 votes.
Political and personal background
Payal Shankar is a key BJP leader in north Telangana. A long-time party functionary, he fought the 2023 election with a campaign centred on civic amenities and local development. His win signalled the BJP’s growing presence in Adilabad, a region earlier dominated by contests between Congress and BRS.
He has listed better basic services, road connectivity, and planned urban growth as his main priorities. In his meetings with the public, he has stressed that civic amenities and youth employment programmes will guide his work as MLA.
Shankar’s win carried weight because he defeated Jogu Ramanna, a former minister and sitting MLA. The Election Commission declared his margin of 6,692 votes.

In his 2023 election affidavit, Payal Shankar reported movable and immovable assets and confirmed no serious criminal cases against him.
