Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has expressed serious concern over emerging cyber threats affecting WhatsApp users through WhatsApp Ghost Pairing attacks. CSB Director Shikha Goel cautioned users against clicking links received on WhatsApp, stressing that cyber criminals are adopting new deceptive methods.
CSB noted that hackers exploit security loopholes when users visit harmful websites or open them using Google Chrome. Through these weaknesses, attackers steal bank passwords and personal data, putting users at significant financial risk.
WhatsApp Ghost Pairing enables unauthorized account linking
As explained by CSB, Ghost Pairing occurs when hackers send deceptive messages containing links that extract WhatsApp pairing codes. These codes allow attackers to link the victim’s account to another device and secretly track conversations without interrupting normal account activity.
To counter such threats, CSB advised WhatsApp users to review the Linked Devices section frequently and remove any unknown connections. Enabling two-step verification is strongly recommended to add an extra layer of security.
The bureau also urged users to stop using suspicious applications or browsers immediately. Keeping evidence such as screenshots of fake messages, transaction details, and call logs is essential for reporting cyber fraud.
CSB further advised updating Google Chrome promptly and changing all critical passwords. In cases where money is lost, users must immediately notify their banks or payment service providers. Sharing OTPs, PINs, CVV numbers, or WhatsApp codes was strictly discouraged.
