AI lessons to be introduced in primary schools from 2026-27

Hyderabad: The School Education Department has decided to introduce AI lessons for primary school students as part of a broader reform initiative aimed at preparing children for emerging technologies from an early age.

Under the new plan, students in Classes 3 to 5 will receive AI-based learning sessions for 80 minutes every week. The programme will use artificial intelligence tools to improve learning outcomes in Mathematics, Telugu and English.

Officials said students will spend 20 minutes twice a week on AI-assisted Mathematics learning. Similar sessions will be conducted for language subjects, taking the total weekly duration to 80 minutes. The initiative is designed to make technology more accessible to children while strengthening foundational learning skills.

The department has also made the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) programme mandatory for all private schools from the 2026-27 academic year. Previously, the programme was implemented only in government schools. The policy will cover students from Classes 1 to 5 and focus on improving age-appropriate learning competencies.

AI lessons form part of wider education reforms

Education officials said Telangana’s ranking in national educational surveys improved from 36th to 26th over the past four years due to targeted interventions. The government now aims to further improve learning standards and achieve better positions in national rankings.

The reform programme seeks to strengthen reading, writing and mathematical skills at the primary level while also introducing students to modern technology. In addition, schools will conduct a Learning Enrichment Period from 3 pm to 4 pm to provide special support for academically lagging students.

The department has also planned three assessments during the academic year. Schools will conduct a baseline test in July, a midline assessment in November and an endline examination in March. Results will be uploaded to the School Education App for monitoring and evaluation.

Teachers will be required to form support groups for students who need additional assistance. Officials said the objective is to ensure that all children achieve minimum learning competencies while benefiting from the new AI lessons programme.
