Hyderabad: Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced Telangana EV discounts of up to 20 percent for government employees, calling it a first-of-its-kind initiative in India to accelerate electric vehicle adoption.
The scheme is expected to benefit more than 5 lakh government employees across the state. Officials said families could save up to βΉ4 lakh through the Telangana EV discounts, depending on the vehicle model and incentives offered by manufacturers.
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with leading electric vehicle makers such as Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors and Ather Energy. These companies have agreed to provide special pricing for government employees.
The government has already introduced 100 percent exemption on road tax and registration charges. Officials said these measures have significantly reduced the upfront cost of EV ownership and improved adoption rates.
Telangana EV discounts backed by infrastructure and policy push
Alongside Telangana EV discounts, the state is expanding charging infrastructure from the Secretariat to district-level locations. Authorities have also urged malls, hotels and public institutions to install EV charging stations to support growing demand.
The government is strengthening public transport electrification. More than 2,800 electric buses are already operating, while plans are in place to convert 1 lakh diesel autos into electric vehicles through phased retrofitting.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is pushing for cleaner mobility as part of a broader environmental strategy. The minister said the initiative aims to reduce fuel dependence and improve air quality across urban centres.
Ponnam Prabhakar said widespread EV adoption would play a key role in achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Telangana. He added that the policy framework combines financial incentives with infrastructure expansion to ensure long-term impact.
