Hyderabad: A 34-year-old woman lawyer was allegedly murdered by her own brother over a property dispute at Kethireddypally village in Telangana, triggering widespread protests by members of the legal fraternity.
The deceased, identified as Swapna, was practicing at the Chevella Court. Police said the killing took place during a panchayat held at a farmland to resolve a family dispute over property. During the discussion, an argument reportedly escalated, leading to the fatal attack.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and the role of those present at the panchayat. The accused brother was taken into custody, and further legal action was underway, officials said.
Woman lawyer murder sparks protests by advocates
Following the woman lawyer murder, advocates expressed outrage and boycotted court proceedings in Chevella. Lawyers staged protests at the Moinabad Police Station, demanding swift justice and stringent action against the accused.
Protesting advocates also blocked the Hyderabad–Bijapur highway, causing traffic disruptions for several hours. Protesters said the incident highlighted growing safety concerns for women and legal professionals.
Police held discussions with protesting lawyers and assured them of a thorough and impartial investigation. Officials said security arrangements were strengthened in the area to prevent any untoward incidents. The case remained under investigation.
