Road Safety Abhiyan 2026 launched to curb rising accidents in Telangana

Hyderabad: Authorities launched Road Safety Abhiyan 2026 across Telangana to raise awareness on traffic rules and accident prevention. The campaign targets students, youth, and the general public amid a steady rise in road accidents.

The Telangana State Legal Services Authority is organising the campaign under the directions of Justice P. Sam Koshy, Judge of the High Court for the State of Telangana and Executive Chairman of TSLSA. The programme will run from January 5 to January 9, 2026.

As part of the initiative, District Legal Services Authorities and Mandal Legal Services Committees will conduct awareness programmes in schools and colleges. During these sessions, officials will explain road safety rules under the Motor Vehicles Act and promote responsible driving habits.

Justice P. Sam Koshy formally launched Road Safety Abhiyan 2026 at an awareness programme held at Chinmaya Vidyalaya. During the event, he released road safety posters and administered a safety pledge to students.

Road Safety Abhiyan highlights alarming accident statistics

Addressing the gathering, Justice Sam Koshy said Telangana recorded 24,826 road accidents in 2025, reflecting a 5.6 per cent increase over 2024. Moreover, he said nearly 6,500 people lost their lives, while 14,768 sustained injuries, highlighting the urgent need for sustained awareness.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police S. V. Raghavendra Rao said strict adherence to traffic rules could prevent most accidents. He warned against underage driving, speeding, drunk driving, and mobile phone use while driving. He also reminded students that the law penalises traffic violations.

Justice Sam Koshy further said authorities would observe the campaign as a road safety week across the state. As part of this effort, officials will display banners and educational material prominently in educational institutions. He urged students to follow traffic signals, understand road signs, and spread awareness among family members and peers.

In addition, TSLSA Member Secretary Ch. Panchakshari said severe head injuries cause most road accident deaths. Therefore, he urged two-wheeler riders to wear helmets at all times. He also cautioned that drunk driving often leads to irreversible loss of life.

Finally, authorities said they will implement Road Safety Abhiyan 2026 in all schools and colleges across Telangana. Para-legal volunteers, panel lawyers, and legal services staff will actively participate in the campaign.
