Liquor sales record in Telangana raises social concern

Hyderabad: Liquor sales in Telangana reached an all-time high during the New Year period. Excise officials reported record revenue collections in December 2025, triggering concern among social activists.

The Telangana Excise Department reported liquor sales worth ₹5,102 crore in Hyderabad alone during December. Of this, sales on December 30 and 31 generated nearly ₹750 crore. These two days coincided with peak New Year celebrations. The figures surpassed all previous liquor sales records in the state.

Excise officials cited several reasons for the surge. New Year festivities sharply increased demand. In addition, sarpanch elections in several areas pushed sales higher. Officials also said the new policy expanded access and improved supply, which further boosted sales.

Liquor sales record sparks debate over social impact

While excise collections strengthened state revenue, social activists raised serious concerns. They warned that excessive alcohol consumption could lead to long-term social problems. These include family distress and public disorder.

Activists argued that heavy dependence on liquor revenue threatens social stability. Therefore, they urged the government to balance revenue goals with public welfare. They also called for stronger awareness campaigns, tighter regulation, and careful policy reforms to prevent unrest.
