Delhi: The Ministry of Coal organised its second coal gasification roadshow in New Delhi, partnering with FICCI to promote cleaner coal utilisation technologies across India’s energy sector.
Additional Secretary Rupinder Brar addressed the gathering, emphasising that coal production had exceeded one billion tonnes and remained central to India’s energy infrastructure. She noted that coal powered nearly 70 per cent of electricity generation and supported industrial growth nationwide.
Brar stated that advanced coal gasification technologies would reduce environmental impact while curbing coal imports and strengthening energy security. Furthermore, she explained that these technologies could create new industries and value chains, stimulate investment, and contribute to economic growth.
The event built upon the first roadshow held in Mumbai, focusing on both surface and underground coal gasification technologies. Senior ministry officials and key stakeholders attended the Delhi gathering to discuss initiatives supporting sustainable energy development.
Additional Secretary Sanoj Kumar Jha highlighted that India’s coal sector formed the backbone of energy security and industrial growth. He emphasised that government initiatives promoted coal gasification and underground coal gasification, requiring private sector participation for rapid technology adoption.
Jha stated that coal gasification could significantly reduce coal imports and substitute domestic coal demand while contributing to sustainable economic growth. He referenced the Coal Gasification Mission launched in 2020, which targets 100 million tonnes by 2030.
Coal gasification roadshow demonstrates technical capabilities and investment opportunities
The ministry created a new sub-sector for syngas production in 2022, advancing initiatives to ensure energy security and promote investment. Officials continue developing these programs to strengthen India’s position as a global leader in sustainable energy.
Subhrakant Panda, Past President of FICCI and Managing Director of Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd, spoke about coal gasification’s strategic importance in reducing import dependency on natural gas, methanol, and ammonia. He noted that coal gasification opened new industrial frontiers by enabling fertiliser and clean fuel production.
Detailed presentations provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of coal gasification technologies and bidding processes. Shubham Goel, Vice President of SBI Capital Markets Limited, elaborated on surface coal gasification and commercial bid procedures.
Director Ajitesh Kumar and Director Technical Birendra Kumar Thakur from the Ministry of Coal presented underground coal gasification overviews. They highlighted technical aspects, operational procedures, and stakeholder opportunities during their presentations.
The event featured an interactive question-and-answer session where participants engaged directly with ministry officials and technical experts. Discussions covered investment strategies, regulatory compliance, project financing, and environmental safeguards related to coal gasification projects.
This roadshow demonstrated the Ministry of Coal’s commitment to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative growth in the coal gasification sector. The event showcased investment opportunities, technological advancements, and government initiatives supporting India’s energy security vision through cleaner coal utilisation.
