Hyderabad: Blood Moon 2025 unfolded as a striking astronomical event, lasting 3 hours and 28 minutes on Sunday night. Starting at 9:56 pm and ending at 1:28 am, the eclipse was India’s most extended total lunar eclipse since 2022. The initial phase was seen in Tamil Nadu, before spreading across the nation.
At its height, from 11:00 pm to 12:23 am, the eclipse reached totality for 82 minutes. Earth’s position between the Sun and the Moon blocked direct sunlight, turning the lunar surface a reddish-orange. This rare alignment is what gives rise to the Blood Moon phenomenon.

This event also carried scientific significance. It marked the first time since July 2018 that an eclipse was visible across India in its entirety. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view directly, which encouraged thousands to watch without filters.
Globally, the eclipse provided varied experiences. Observers across Asia, Western Australia, and parts of Europe and Africa witnessed the phenomenon. Asia and Australia had the most favorable conditions due to the Moon’s elevation, while in Europe and Africa it was briefly visible during moonrise.
Reported timings further confirmed its global impact. In Bangkok, it was visible from 12:30 am to 1:52 am. Beijing and Hong Kong observed it from 1:30 am to 2:52 am, Tokyo from 2:30 am to 3:52 am, and Sydney from 3:30 am to 4:52 am.
