Hazratbal Dargah plaque dispute sparks debate over faith and state symbolism

Jammu: A clash erupted at Hazratbal Dargah on Friday after worshippers damaged a newly installed stone plaque featuring the Ashoka pillar. The incident reignited debate on the balance between religious tradition and state symbolism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The disturbance began soon after Friday prayers. Worshippers protested against the plaque, raised slogans against the Waqf Board, and created tension at the shrine.

Hazratbal Dargah, the most significant religious site for Kashmiri Muslims, houses relics of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Waqf Board recently completed its renovation at a cost of crores. However, the inclusion of the national emblem on the inauguration plaque overshadowed the project.

Political reactions came swiftly. The National Conference and other opposition parties accused the administration of ignoring religious sentiments. PDP leader Iltija Mufti alleged that authorities had deliberately tried to provoke the Muslim community.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed disapproval. He said he had never seen national emblems at religious sites. He questioned the need for placing the Ashoka pillar at Hazratbal when the restoration itself was recognition enough.
