Ugadi clay pots distribution promotes traditional crafts

Hyderabad: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar distributed Ugadi clay pots to Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukender Reddy, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka at the Assembly premises, promoting traditional practices and eco-friendly living.

Marking the Sri Parabhava Nama Samvatsara Ugadi festival, the minister launched the initiative with the slogan, “Use clay pots, protect health, and support traditional occupations.” The gesture aimed to encourage people to adopt sustainable habits while preserving cultural heritage.

The Ugadi kits included earthen pots, glasses, a jug, and bowls, along with essential festive ingredients. These comprised mango pieces, neem flowers, jaggery, tamarind, and spices symbolising the six tastes associated with Ugadi. Officials said the distribution highlighted the cultural and nutritional significance of the festival.

Leaders conveyed Ugadi greetings to the people of the state and stressed the importance of protecting nature. They urged citizens to reduce the use of synthetic materials and shift towards eco-friendly alternatives such as clay utensils.

The Ugadi clay pots initiative also focused on safeguarding the environment and strengthening traditional occupations linked to pottery. Leaders noted that increased use of clay products could provide sustained livelihoods to artisans dependent on such crafts.

They emphasised that using earthenware is a long-standing tradition that supports better health and reduces the risk of certain illnesses. Moreover, they called on people to celebrate the festival by embracing natural materials and preserving cultural values.

Officials reiterated that festivals offer an opportunity to reconnect with heritage while promoting sustainability. They added that such initiatives could help revive fading rural occupations and ensure long-term environmental benefits.
