Nationwide Bharat Bandh Today Over Labor Codes

Hyderabad: Bharat Bandh Today is being held nationwide following a joint call by 10 trade unions and farmers’ associations to oppose the central government’s recent decisions. The protest is scheduled for February 12 and is expected to impact multiple services across the country.

The Congress has declared its national-level support for the bandh. The AICC has directed its state units to participate actively and protest against the policies of the central government.

Public services may experience disruption in several states. Banks, government offices, schools, markets, and transport operations are likely to be affected. Moreover, authorities may close educational institutions in areas witnessing intense protests.

Bharat Bandh Today Targets New Labor Codes and Policies

The central government introduced four new labor codes over the past year, replacing 29 earlier labor laws. Trade unions have alleged that these codes will weaken workers’ rights and reduce job security. Labor leaders have further criticized the reforms, stating they could make employee termination easier for employers.

In addition, unions have expressed dissatisfaction over privatization, low wages, and lack of social security. They have demanded the withdrawal of certain bills and the revival of the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Farmer organizations have also voiced concerns regarding the recent US-India trade deal. They allege that reduced tariffs and the entry of American products into Indian markets could cause losses to farmers. As a result, farmer groups have joined the call for Bharat Bandh Today.

Despite expected disruptions, emergency services including hospitals and ambulances will continue functioning normally. Airports and essential public services will remain operational. However, traffic congestion may occur due to protest activities, and commuters are advised to plan accordingly.
