Hyderabad Old City Metro expansion highlights challenges and progress

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Old City Metro expansion is moving into a decisive phase as officials balance rapid construction goals with engineering and heritage challenges.

Metro MD NVS Reddy said 886 properties are required for the 7.5 km corridor, down from the earlier 1,100 due to engineering solutions. More than 550 demolitions are done, with ₹433 crore compensation distributed.

The use of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveys has improved alignment accuracy. Soil strength, underground utilities, and sensitive structures are being mapped to ensure safe execution.

The project requires shifting of water, sewer, electricity, and telecom lines beneath narrow old roads. Agencies are coordinating to reroute these before pillar foundations begin.

While delays occurred due to rains and festivals, officials maintained steady progress. Once preliminary work ends, full-scale metro rail construction will commence.
