Hyderabad: Congress veteran Shabbir Ali has urged Muslims in Telangana to view voting and education as tools for empowerment. Speaking at Masjid-e-Kaneez Fatima in Madhura Nagar, Ameerpet, before Friday prayers, he said every vote represents self-respect and participation in democracy.
He reminded citizens that abstaining from elections weakens a community’s presence. “Your vote ensures representation. Without it, others decide your destiny,” he said, appealing to professionals to ensure full voter turnout in the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election.
“Democracy thrives when people engage. We are 13% of Telangana’s population, but our influence depends on participation,” he stated.
Referring to official data, Shabbir Ali said only 2.5% of Muslims in Telangana are economically strong, underscoring the need for educational progress. “Voting begins the journey toward empowerment,” he said.
Shabbir Ali says education drives change and opportunity
Transitioning to the role of education, he recalled the Congress government’s 2004 policy granting 4% reservation for Muslims in education and employment. “That decision was a turning point. Today, over 22 lakh students have benefited, transforming lives and careers,” he said.
He cited Kaloji Narayana Rao University’s report showing 1,248 Muslim medical admissions this year, including 700 girls. “Their success is a matter of pride,” he added, urging parents to create disciplined learning environments at home. “Children must learn to balance faith, study, and responsibility.”
He described education as the “river of guidance” that leads youth toward success. “An educated mind finds direction; ignorance blocks growth,” he said, emphasising that faith and knowledge are inseparable. “The Quran begins with ‘Iqra’—the divine call to learn,” he noted.
Shabbir Ali concluded by reminding the community that education gives dignity, and voting ensures representation. “Together, they secure our existence and protect our identity,” he said, pledging continued support for education and welfare programmes.
