Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police deported a Nigerian national after finding him staying illegally in India. Police also alleged that he associated with drug peddlers, officials said on Tuesday.
Acting on suspicion, the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) apprehended Obasi James Victor (38), a native of the Nigeria, within the limits of Tolichowki Police Station. During questioning, he failed to produce valid travel documents. Later, he admitted that his passport and visa had expired.
According to officials, Obasi entered India on a tourist visa in 2011. Initially, he ran a cloth export business with Nigeria. Later, he opened William African Restaurant in Delhi and lived there with his family. However, after his documents expired, he continued to stay in India illegally. Meanwhile, police alleged that he became involved in drug trafficking and other unlawful activities to earn money.
Therefore, police took action to prevent activities that could harm national security.
Nigerian national deported after FRRO clearance
To proceed with deportation, H-NEW coordinated with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office Hyderabad. Subsequently, officials obtained an Emergency Travel Document from the Nigeria High Commission New Delhi. They also secured an exit permit from the FRRO.
After completing all formalities, police booked his travel from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to Lagos. A team led by Inspector G.S. Daniel escorted him. Finally, authorities deported Obasi to his home country in the early hours of January 13, 2026.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad police urged the public to remain alert. They warned that some foreigners enter India on medical, student, or business visas and later overstay. According to police, a few of them also engage in drug-related crimes.
Therefore, H-NEW appealed to citizens to stay away from substance abuse. It also advised parents to closely monitor their children’s activities. Finally, police requested the public to share information related to drug abuse with H-NEW to help build a drug-free Hyderabad.
