NHRC warns Telangana Education Secretary over Gurukul food poisoning cases

Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission expressed strong dissatisfaction with Telangana Education Secretary Yogita Rana for failing to submit a report on repeated food poisoning incidents in government-run Gurukul schools. The Commission warned of personal action if she does not comply within two weeks.

The Commission reviewed Case No. 318/36/19/2025 during fresh proceedings. Senior human rights lawyer Rama Rao Immaneni filed the petition. The NHRC noted that it had earlier directed the state to submit a detailed report. However, the Education Department did not respond despite adequate time.

The case concerns the death of a student, Shailaja, after she consumed contaminated food at Wankidi Ashram School. In the same incident, nearly 60 girl students fell ill and required medical care.

During the hearing, the Commission recorded 866 food poisoning cases in government-run Gurukul schools across Telangana. It said the lack of response from the Education Department showed serious administrative apathy.

The NHRC cautioned Yogita Rana that it would invoke powers under Section 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act if she fails to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks. The Commission said it will decide further action after reviewing the report and the state’s explanation.
