NHAI abolishes FASTag KYV verification for private vehicles from February 1

Hyderabad: The National Highways Authority of India has scrapped FASTag KYV verification for private vehicles. The new rule will apply to cars, jeeps and vans from February 1.

Under the revised policy, vehicle owners will no longer complete KYV after receiving a FASTag. Instead, banks will finish the entire verification process before issuing the FASTag. As a result, motorists will no longer face repeated document uploads, bank visits or account blocks.

Earlier, vehicle owners had to submit documents during purchase and again complete KYV after activation. This process often caused FASTag blocks and delays at toll plazas. Now, FASTags will work immediately upon issuance.

FASTag KYV responsibility shifts to banks

The change will also help existing FASTag users. NHAI clarified that old FASTags will continue to function without routine KYV updates. However, banks will seek verification only in specific cases. These include improper tag placement, misuse on another vehicle, or reported complaints.

Under the new framework, banks issuing FASTags will verify vehicle details in advance through the Vahan database. If data is unavailable, banks will verify physical RC copies. The same process will apply to FASTags bought through online platforms.

Officials said the move will reduce inconvenience for motorists. It will also improve toll plaza efficiency and speed up transactions. Moreover, the decision is expected to benefit lakhs of private vehicle owners who regularly use national highways.
