Malaysia Open: PV Sindhu bows out after semifinal defeat

Hyderabad: India’s badminton star PV Sindhu exited the Malaysia Open after suffering a straight-games defeat in the women’s singles semifinal on Saturday.

Sindhu lost 16-21, 15-21 to world number two Wang Zhiyi of China in a contest that lasted 47 minutes. Although the Indian shuttler put up a strong fight from the opening rally, she could not sustain the momentum against her higher-ranked opponent.

The opening game saw both players locked at level scores midway. However, Wang Zhiyi stepped up the tempo with a series of sharp smashes and controlled rallies to take the first set 21-16.

In the second game, Malaysia Open PV Sindhu tried to mount a comeback and stayed in touch during the early exchanges. Despite her efforts, she struggled to break through Wang Zhiyi’s solid defence and consistency from the baseline.

The Chinese shuttler maintained her composure and closed out the match 21-15, sealing Sindhu’s exit from the tournament at the semifinal stage.

With this defeat, Sindhu’s campaign at the Malaysia Open came to an end, while Wang Zhiyi advanced to the final, underlining her strong form in the tournament.
