Hyderabad: BRS working president K T Rama Rao on Saturday strongly condemned the illegal arrests of auto drivers across Telangana. He accused the Congress government of crushing legitimate demands through detentions and imprisonment.
KTR said police took thousands of auto drivers and union leaders into custody across the state. The arrests followed a protest call by the auto drivers’ Joint Action Committee to draw the Assembly’s attention to unfulfilled promises. He termed the arrests unlawful and described the detentions at multiple police stations as a “heinous act.”
KTR alleged that the Congress government responds to public questioning with arrests and police action. He said the government targeted auto drivers simply for demanding the assurances promised before the elections.
Illegal arrests of auto drivers aim to silence demands: KTR
KTR demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all arrested auto drivers and union leaders. He also urged the government to issue a clear statement in the Assembly on the implementation of promises made to auto drivers.
Warning of serious consequences, KTR said the government must act without delay to prevent further distress among auto drivers. He added that such arrests would not stop the opposition from raising public issues and holding the government accountable.
