Tragedy at Karur rally stampede: 31 lives lost during Vijay’s event

Hyderabad: What began as a political rally in Karur turned into a tragedy when a stampede killed 31 people on Saturday evening. The event was organised by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), and drew a massive turnout.

The victims included 16 women, nine men, and six children. More than 30 others were injured, with many admitted to hospitals. Health Minister M.A. Subramanian confirmed the toll and said the numbers might increase.

Massive turnout overwhelmed Vijay’s Karur rally and caused stampede deaths

Trouble began when Vijay asked from the stage for help in tracing a nine-year-old girl missing in the crowd. That triggered confusion, and people pressed forward. Several attendees fainted or suffocated as the crush worsened. Witnesses said Vijay stopped speaking and appealed for calm, later leaving the venue as panic grew.

The rally had permission for only 10,000 people, but officials estimated attendance at 1.2 lakh. Even before Vijay’s arrival, many had been waiting for hours. At least seven of the dead were TVK supporters who had gathered early.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as unfortunate and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Karur rally stampede has sparked concerns over public safety in political events. Experts warn that unless stricter crowd control measures are enforced, similar tragedies could recur.
