Hyderabad: In a rare gesture that highlighted the importance of education, former minister Harish Rao mortgaged his house to save a poor medical student’s future. He mortgaged his Siddipet house and helped a bank sanction an education loan of Rs 20 lakh to Mamata.
Mamata secured a PG medical seat under the convener quota. However, she could not arrange the annual tuition fee of Rs 7.50 lakh. Despite several attempts, her family failed to raise the amount. Banks also refused loans without collateral.

After learning about the issue, He immediately contacted the bank. He offered his property as security for the loan. As a result, the bank released the funds before the December 18 deadline. This step ensured Mamata retained her PG seat.
In addition, he paid Rs 1 lakh towards her hostel expenses. Earlier, he had also supported Mamata and her three siblings during their MBBS studies.
Mamata said the gesture left her overwhelmed. Her father said the family would remain indebted to Harish Rao for life.
