Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) conducted a counselling and awareness session on January 20, 2026, for drug consumers identified in a Langar House Police Station case. Additionally, the programme included their parents and relatives. Officials held the session at the Old CP Office conference hall in Basheerbagh.
Case Background and Participation
H-NEW organised the programme in connection with Cr. No. 262/2025, registered under multiple sections of the NDPS Act, 1985. According to officials, the case identified more than 100 drug consumers. However, only 40 consumers attended the session along with their parents and family members.
Focus on Awareness and Rehabilitation
The counselling session aimed to educate parents on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the early warning signs of addiction. Moreover, officials emphasised the crucial role of family support in rehabilitation and long-term recovery.
DCP Calls Drug Abuse a Public Health Issue
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force/H-NEW) Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath said drug abuse must be viewed as a serious public health concern, not merely a law-and-order issue. Therefore, he urged parents to remain vigilant, maintain open communication with their children, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to prevent drug-related activities.
Legal Consequences Explained
The DCP also explained the legal consequences of drug abuse and trafficking. At the same time, he appreciated the H-NEW team for its sustained efforts in prevention, counselling, and rehabilitation. He further clarified that the police focus on behavioural change and reintegration rather than punishment.
Parents Engage with Officials
During the session, parents actively interacted with officials, shared concerns, and sought clarifications. In response, the DCP advised parents to closely observe behavioural changes in their children. If necessary, he suggested approaching professional counsellors at the earliest stage.
Collective Responsibility Stressed
The DCP stressed that parental involvement and collective responsibility are essential to building a drug-free society. Meanwhile, officials said Hyderabad City Police aim to guide drug consumers towards healthier lifestyles and positive habits instead of imposing punitive measures.
Commitment to a Drug-Free Hyderabad
H-NEW reaffirmed its commitment to continue awareness and counselling programmes. Through these initiatives, the wing aims to protect youth, strengthen community participation, and effectively combat drug abuse. Ultimately, the goal is to make Hyderabad a drug-free city.
Inspector G. S. Daniel and Sub-Inspector C. Venkata Ramulu of H-NEW, along with their team, actively participated in the programme.
