Governor Jishnu Dev Varma attends Northeastern Statehood Day celebrations in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Jishnu Dev Varma attended the Northeastern Statehood Day celebrations as chief guest on Tuesday. The event marked the statehood of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura. It took place at Lok Bhavan.

The organisers held the programme under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative. It celebrated the history, culture, and development of the three Northeastern states. Addressing the gathering, the Governor said such events strengthen mutual understanding. He added that they also reinforce India’s unity in diversity.

Meanwhile, he urged greater national and global attention on Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura as tourist destinations. He cited their natural beauty, cultural vibrancy, and rich heritage. He also paid tribute to their statehood under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. Further, he praised the resilience and progress of their people.

The Governor also spoke about Hyderabad’s inclusive ethos. He said the recent Telangana North East Connect Techno-Cultural Festival strengthened inter-state ties. According to him, cultural exhibitions, youth exchanges, and interactive sessions drove this engagement.

Northeastern Statehood Day marked by cultural performances

During the programme, organisers screened video messages from the Governors of the three states. In addition, representatives from Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura addressed the gathering. They highlighted their regions’ traditions and development priorities.

The celebrations also featured cultural performances. Artists presented a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore with the song “Tomaro Ashimee”. Performers showcased Chitrangada dance from Tripura, Manipuri dance forms, and Khasi folk songs from Meghalaya.

Several dignitaries attended the event. They included M. Dana Kishore, IAS, Special Chief Secretary to the Governor; Sonibala Devi, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Sports Authority of Telangana State; Goutham Sawang, IPS (Retd.); Dr. Chranjith Ghosh of Tripura; senior officials; and representatives from the Northeastern states.
