Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will launch a GHMC e-waste drive across 300 wards in the city on January 12 and 13 as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable urban sanitation and environmental protection.
Officials said the two-day drive, being organised under the Swachh Bharat Mission, aims to create awareness on responsible disposal of electronic waste and ensure systematic collection, segregation and scientific processing of e-waste from residential, commercial and public areas.
The GHMC e-waste drive will focus on collecting a wide range of discarded electronic items, including large and small household appliances, IT and telecom equipment, consumer electronics, batteries, UPS systems and other electronic accessories. The civic body said the initiative was designed to prevent unsafe disposal practices that pose risks to public health and the environment.
Operations planned under GHMC e-waste drive
Officials said the drive would be implemented in coordination with HiMSW Limited, which will deploy dedicated, branded e-waste collection vehicles in every circle. The collected material will be transported to the authorised e-waste processing facility at Dundigal for scientific handling in line with prevailing e-waste management rules.
To ensure effective public participation, awareness campaigns will be conducted from January 9 with the involvement of sanitation workers, resident welfare associations, non-governmental organisations and self-help groups. Temporary collection points have been identified in each ward to facilitate smooth operations during the two-day drive.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan directed Zonal Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and sanitation officials to mobilise all stakeholders for the successful execution of the programme. The civic body has also instructed its public relations wing to ensure wide publicity and media outreach.
Officials reiterated that proper management of electronic waste is critical for safeguarding public health and the environment and urged citizens to actively participate in the GHMC e-waste drive to help make Hyderabad cleaner and greener.
