Hyderabad: Police arrested two accused in a KPHB medical negligence case after a 66-year-old woman died due to a drug overdose while undergoing a CT scan at a private diagnostic centre, officials said.
The incident occurred on May 6 last year, when the elderly woman visited Medquest Diagnostics Center with complaints of a running nose. During the visit, two staff members administered a contrast dosage to her as part of a CT scan procedure. Soon after, her condition deteriorated, and she suffered a heart attack, leading to her death.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family members, Telangana Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The woman’s family alleged that the dosage administered during the scan was excessive and improperly handled.
During the probe, police identified the accused as Srinivas Panivarma, aged 46, and Subrahmanyam Udayagiri, aged 38. Investigators found that both men were not qualified to administer contrast injections or perform the related medical procedure.
KPHB medical negligence confirmed in postmortem report
Police said the postmortem report clearly established that the elderly woman died due to medical negligence. The report attributed the cause of death to a heart attack triggered by an overdose of the contrast drug administered during the CT scan.
Following the confirmation, police arrested both accused on Wednesday and produced them before a court. They were subsequently sent to judicial remand. Officials said further investigation was underway to determine whether other lapses occurred at the diagnostic centre and to fix accountability.
