Cyberabad police warn against Chinese manja after series of injuries

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Police issued a strong warning against the sale and use of Chinese manja. Police cautioned that nylon and glass-coated kite strings have caused serious accidents and injuries.

According to police, several recent incidents occurred across Cyberabad. Areas such as Miyapur–Chandanagar main road, Madhapur, Hitec City, Kukatpally and Gachibowli reported multiple cases. In these incidents, Chinese manja wrapped around the necks of commuters and caused severe injuries.

In one major case on Balanagar road, a kite string struck a two-wheeler rider in moving traffic. As a result, the rider suffered deep neck wounds.

Officials explained that kites flown from terraces and apartment rooftops often leave manja strings behind. These strings hang from trees and power lines. Later, they fall onto roads and turn into deadly traps for motorists.

Moreover, nylon Chinese manja contains glass powder or metal particles. Due to this coating, the string becomes extremely sharp. At high speed, it can cause deep cuts, heavy bleeding and even death.

Chinese manja poses danger to people and animals

Police said the threat extends beyond humans. Birds such as sparrows, crows and kites often die after strings entangle their wings. Similarly, stray dogs and cattle suffer injuries when manja wraps around their legs.

Therefore, Cyberabad Police warned of strict legal action against violators. Anyone selling, storing, transporting or using Chinese manja will face cases. This year alone, police have registered 53 cases against Chinese manja sellers within Cyberabad limits.

Meanwhile, police advised citizens to use only cotton kite strings. They urged people to avoid flying kites on rooftops without safety measures. Additionally, they warned the public to stay away from roads, traffic-heavy areas, power lines and transformers.

Police also asked parents to supervise children during kite flying. Two-wheeler riders should wear helmets and maintain moderate speeds during the season. Furthermore, citizens should report hanging or discarded kite strings to GHMC officials. Police warned people not to remove strings stuck on trees or electric lines by themselves.

The Cyberabad Police Commissioner’s Office issued the advisory in the interest of public safety.
