Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Congress Committee has announced a three-day MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Yatra from January 24. Through this move, the party has stepped up its opposition to proposed changes in the rural employment guarantee scheme.
Syed Khalid Saifullah will lead the yatra. He said the programme reflects the party’s commitment to protecting the Right to Work.
The yatra will begin at Charminar. It will pass through Bahadurpura, Yakutpura and Chandrayangutta constituencies. Finally, it will end at Malakpet TV Tower on January 26. The conclusion will coincide with Republic Day.
MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Yatra highlights rural distress
Khalid Saifullah said the yatra would expose the impact of recent policy changes on rural families. He alleged that the Centre’s approach threatens guaranteed employment. Moreover, he said it could reduce wage security and weaken Gram Panchayats.
He added that the changes would push financial burdens onto state governments. According to him, converting a legal right into a discretionary scheme would hurt daily-wage workers and rural youth.
He further warned that weakening MGNREGA could accelerate migration from villages. As a result, cities like Hyderabad may face added pressure.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad DCC leader said the Congress would continue its fight. He said the party would protest at both state and national levels until the Centre withdraws what it calls anti-poor amendments.
