Hyderabad: BRS senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail accused the Congress government in Telangana of systematically dismantling the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society on Tuesday, describing the initiative as the proud creation of the K. Chandrashekhar Rao government.
Sohail told media persons that the present government ruined a model institution that transformed the lives of thousands of minority students. The BRS leader claimed that TMREIS institutions ruined under Congress administration represented the destruction of a national benchmark for quality education and social upliftment.
TMREIS was established by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao in 2016 and emerged as a national benchmark for quality education and social upliftment, according to Sohail. He stated that BRS built this institution from scratch, ensuring dignity, free English-medium education, accommodation, and meals for more than one lakh minority students across Telangana, while the Congress government now destroys that legacy through neglect and mismanagement.
BRS leader claims Congress taking false credit for TMREIS academic achievements
Sohail accused Congress leaders of taking false credit for recent academic successes of TMREIS students in competitive examinations. He stated those achievements resulted from the foundation laid by KCR’s government and dedicated teachers recruited under BRS, while Congress merely inherits the results while failing to maintain even basic infrastructure.
The BRS leader cited reports of unpaid building rents, staff shortages, and repeated food-related incidents, claiming that TMREIS institutions ruined suffered severe setbacks since Congress came to power in December 2023. Rents for a majority of schools have not been paid for months, forcing landlords to issue eviction notices, with some schools locked and students sent home temporarily, which was unheard of during BRS tenure, Sohail remarked.
He pointed out that over 2,000 staff positions, including teachers and wardens, remain vacant, compromising student safety and academic standards. The last major recruitment drive happened under BRS, and since then, the government has not filled even a single key position, with the burden on existing teachers doubling and leading to poor supervision and declining quality, he said.
The BRS leader appealed to voters of Jubilee Hills to punish the Congress party for ruining TMREIS institutions.
Highlighting recent tragedies, Sohail referred to the death of a Class 9 student at the Champapet TMREIS school and another in Zaheerabad earlier this year, calling them a result of official negligence. He stated that even the National Human Rights Commission recorded hundreds of food poisoning incidents and several student deaths in Telangana’s residential schools, yet the Chief Minister, who also holds the education portfolio, remains silent.
Sohail accused the government of tokenism, stating that schemes like the Rs 50,000 Indiramma Minority Mahila Yojana and minor repair grants were no substitute for serious policy reform. He described these announcements as publicity stunts, asserting that TMREIS needs steady funding, timely rent payments, and full staff recruitment instead of empty promises.
He demanded that the government immediately release pending funds, clear arrears to school landlords, and resume recruitment to restore the functioning of residential institutions. Sohail warned that Congress has turned what was once Telangana’s pride into a national embarrassment, stating that TMREIS symbolized KCR’s commitment to minority empowerment, and if neglect continues, Telangana will lose one of its greatest social welfare achievements.
