Hyderabad: Hong Kong witnessed one of its deadliest residential disasters when a fire erupted in a Tai Po building. The flames spread rapidly and reached six more towers. The blaze became intense within hours. Thick smoke covered the entire neighbourhood. Emergency teams rushed to rescue residents trapped inside. Many families were caught off guard as conditions worsened.
Officials confirmed the death of 44 people. They also stated that more than 250 individuals remain unaccounted for. One firefighter died while responding. Several others suffered exhaustion. Authorities moved 900 residents out of the complex. They also shifted many families to temporary camps. Rescue teams continued search operations through the night.
Arrests made as inquiries deepen into the Hong Kong fire incident
Police revealed that two construction company directors and a consultant were arrested. Investigators found flammable polystyrene boards fixed around window areas. These materials allowed the fire to spread faster. Officials said the flames climbed bamboo structures. As a result, burning debris collapsed onto adjacent towers. Social media videos showed the intensity of the fire.
The Fire Services Department mobilised a large response. They deployed more than 140 engines and 60 ambulances. Hundreds of firefighters and police officers assisted. Teams received many emergency calls in a short span. The blaze reached exterior sections before responders arrived. However, crews worked continuously to contain further damage.
Chief Executive John Lee said the investigation will be thorough. He confirmed that a special probe team has been established. He also noted that the situation remained challenging. The Wang Fuk Court complex houses almost 4,000 people. Government units are providing shelter to displaced residents. Additional support teams are monitoring the affected zone.
