Hyderabad: The Chief Secretary directed officials to implement the Arrive Alive programme across Telangana to curb rising road accidents and improve safety.
During a video conference with District Collectors, Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao said accidents continue to increase despite ongoing safety measures. He attributed the trend to rising vehicle numbers, higher speeds on improved roads, and reckless driving.
He asked officials to prioritise road safety and develop innovative, local solutions to reduce accidents. He also directed immediate meetings of District Road Safety Committees to plan and execute the week-long programme effectively.
The Chief Secretary stressed the need to involve public representatives to ensure wider participation and awareness. He said coordinated efforts and sustained campaigns are essential to save lives and promote responsible road usage.
Arrive Alive programme focuses on targeted activities
The Arrive Alive programme will be held from April 13 to 18 with focused activities across the state. On April 13, village-level Road Safety Committees will be formed, followed by a road safety pledge on April 14 during Ambedkar Jayanti.
April 15 will be observed as Children Road Safety Day, highlighting seat belt use for children. On April 16, awareness campaigns will target government employees to promote helmet and seat belt usage.
Authorities will conduct “Golden Hour” emergency response training on April 17 to improve post-accident care. On April 18, counselling sessions for traffic violators will aim to encourage behavioural change.
Director General of Police Shivadhar Reddy said the programme is a comprehensive, multi-departmental effort. He noted that pedestrians and two-wheeler riders form a majority of accident victims, stressing the need for targeted awareness.
Senior officials, including Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj and other department heads, participated in the review meeting.
