Arham Adil backs Telangana hate speech bill

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Arham Adil has welcomed the introduction of the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2026, along with the passage of the Gig Workers Welfare legislation, calling both measures progressive and future-oriented.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said the Telangana hate speech bill reflects the firm commitment of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to uphold constitutional values and maintain social harmony. He added that misuse of digital platforms to spread hatred has increased, making a strong legal framework essential.

Telangana hate speech bill strengthens constitutional protections and accountability

Adil noted that referring the bill to a Select Committee would ensure broader consultations. Moreover, he said such a step would strengthen the law through inclusive deliberation. According to him, the Telangana hate speech bill includes provisions that define hate speech comprehensively and make hate crimes cognizable and non-bailable.

He further emphasised that stringent punishments for repeat offenders would act as a deterrent. At the same time, the law balances enforcement with accountability by addressing prejudicial interests and ensuring victim compensation.

Turning to the Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers Registration, Social Security and Welfare Bill, 2026, Adil described it as a landmark reform. He said the law recognises gig workers such as delivery personnel, cab drivers, and service providers as key contributors to the economy.

He highlighted provisions like the creation of a Welfare Board, issuance of unique IDs, and a welfare fund supported by a transaction-based levy. Additionally, he praised mandatory transparency in platform operations.

Adil stated that the consultative approach adopted by the government sets a model for participatory governance. He added that these reforms reflect the Congress party’s commitment to inclusive growth and social justice.

He also remarked that a similar legal framework should be implemented at the national level to address hate speech across the country. Finally, he congratulated the Telangana government for taking decisive steps to strengthen democracy and protect vulnerable sections.
